Jason Velez on the Mission That Built NYAG
My professional journey began in 1998 at Goldman Sachs, where I was shaped under the leadership of Hank Paulson, John Thain, and John Corzine during what many call the golden era of Wall Street. That period of exuberance quickly collided with reality as the dot-com crash wiped out trillions in market value and drove the NASDAQ down by 75%. Witnessing this seismic collapse was humbling, but it revealed the most important truth of my career: the non-negotiable value of a client-first approach.
Nearly three decades later, I have advised and led organizations across industries and continents, partnering with global leaders including Google, Bridgewater, PepsiCo, and Microsoft. Through it all, one principle has remained the lifeblood of my work and the foundation of the New York Advisory Group: lasting success begins with putting clients at the center of every decision.
This mission is also fueled by a deep passion for what lies ahead. Having worked across the U.S., Europe, and as far south as Africa, I have seen firsthand the organizations that thrived by reading the technological signals early—and those that collapsed during the Great Recession by clinging to outdated models and treating customers as afterthoughts. The difference between resilience and ruin is clear: innovation, discipline, and client-centricity.

Influence, Insight, and Purpose
My professional philosophy was inspired by Ray Dalio, the legendary founder of Bridgewater Associates. During two tenures at Bridgewater, I learned the transformative power of radical truth and transparency, a meritocratic approach, and the necessity of embracing reality. I discovered that pressure is a privilege, as is leadership—when others rely on you to rise above adversity, you either walk through the fire or are consumed by it.
As Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” NYAG embodies this principle. It is not merely a brand—it is my life’s work.
